SUSTAINABLE MOSQUE DESIGN
Theme: Design in Our World
Mission:
Mosques are at the heart of Muslim communities — places for prayer, learning, gathering, and celebration. But as our world faces climate change, mosques of the future will need to be designed with sustainability in mind. Imagine a mosque that generates its own clean energy, collects and purifies rainwater, grows food in its gardens, and produces zero waste. Your mission is to design the ultimate eco-friendly mosque of the future!

Age: 8+
Groups: Individually or in small groups.
Learning aims: sustainable design principles, environmental awareness in Islam, architectural thinking, creative engineering.
You’ll need: Pen, paper, colouring materials, Youtube.
Let’s Get Started!
Watch videos about sustainable architecture and green building design. Search for “sustainable buildings for kids” on YouTube.
Think about what makes a mosque special — the minaret, the dome, the prayer hall, the courtyard, the wudu area. How could each of these be designed to be more environmentally friendly?
Sketch your sustainable mosque design from the outside. Label all the green features (solar panels, rainwater collection, gardens, natural ventilation, etc.).
Now sketch the inside. How does the building stay cool without heavy air conditioning? How is water reused?
Write a short paragraph explaining how your mosque benefits both the community and the environment.
